Prez calls for report on delay in importing eggs!

Published

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed Trade Minister Nalin Fernando to submit a comprehensive report to the next Cabinet meeting regarding the people who obstruct the process of importing eggs.

The President had expressed these views during the Cabinet meeting held yesterday.

The trade minister informed the Cabinet meeting that some parties are attempting to prevent egg imports.

Meanwhile, Government Veterinary Officers’ Association President Dr. Sisira Piyasiri said that they will join poultry farmers in a massive protest if eggs are imported without finding solutions to the issues faced by the farmers.

Dr.Piyasiri said several politicians expressed objections to the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) Director General during a COPE meeting for not allowing the import of eggs even when there is a bird flu spreading in several states of India.

The government veterinary officers went on sick leave yesterday (30) in protest of this incident and over the failure to provide solutions to the problems of poultry farmers.

Dr.Piyasiri said the local poultry industry will collapse if eggs are imported. He also said none of the proposals presented by the veterinarians to develop the industry have been implemented so far.
