Rice variety similar to Keeri Samba to be imported?

Published

on

As plans are underway to import rice to avoid a Keeri Samba shortage in the upcoming festive season, sources from the Trade Ministry indicate that a rice variety similar to Keeri Samba will be imported instead of the same variety.

Meanwhile, speaking at the Cabinet briefing last week, Cabinet spokesman – Bandula Gunawardena said that Cabinet approval had been granted to import 100,000MT of Keeri Samba or Samba rice.

Speaking to the media recently, the minister slammed rice millers for deliberately concealing stocks to create an artificial shortage.

However, noting that the Consumer Affair Authority also falls under the purview of Minister Nalin Fernando, rice wholesalers say it is bizarre why such errant millers are not raided by the CAA.

Speaking to ‘Sri Lanka Mirror’, leader of the National Consumer Front – Asela Sampath said that Minister Nalin Fernando is properly setting out to ruin Christmas.

He also said that more details will be revealed soon.
