Final phase of third school term begins!

The final phase of the third school term of the 2022 academic year in government and government-approved private schools began today (20).

The Education Ministry took steps to give holidays to schools from January 23rd due to the A/L examination.

Accordingly, the third term of the 2022 school year is scheduled to end on March 24.

The first term of the 2023 academic year is scheduled to begin on March 27.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that it has planned to finish distributing textbooks related to the academic year 2023 before March 27.

Gazette issued for salt imports

A gazette notification has been issued for the import of salt.

Controller General of Imports – Upulmali Premathilaka states that a gazette notification has been issued allowing the import of salt until June 10th.

Accordingly, a license is not required to import salt.

She noted that any importer who has recommendations from the Ministry of Health can import salt and that it is possible to import non-iodized and table salt under this.

Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that 250 MT of salt for consumption will be imported into the country today (May 20).

The Minister also stated that the salt stocks imported from India will arrive in the country soon.

Keheliya produced before court

Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who has been arrested and remanded in connection with 03 cases filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), has been produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court by prison officials.

The case is scheduled to be taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali today (May 20).

‘Sisu Sariya’ driver arrested for drunk driving

A school bus driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during an inspection of a ‘Sisu Sariya’ bus conducted by the Katupotha Police Traffic Division yesterday (May 19) in Katupotha.

The suspect has been identified as a 52-year-old resident of Radaliyagoda, Katupotha.

At the time of the arrest, 16 school children and 02 mothers were traveling in the bus.

The relevant bus has also been taken into police custody, and the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Narammala Magistrate’s Court today (May 20).

Police are continuing island-wide operations to apprehend drunk drivers and curb traffic violations in an effort to enhance road safety.
