Karapitiya Hospital oncologist remanded over assault charges

A senior oncologist attached to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, who was arrested over an alleged assault incident, has been remanded.

The Galle Magistrate had ordered to remand the suspect until Jan. 22.

The 61-year-old was arrested for allegedly assaulting a female junior staff member at the hospital yesterday.

The incident is reported to have taken place after the oncologist had engaged in an argument with a group of junior staff over the token strike carried out by them.

Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) officially assumed duties as Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Mayor today (June 18).

The most talked-about candidate in the 2025 Local Government Election, Balthazaar was elected the 26th Mayor of the CMC while receiving 61 votes following a secret ballot on Monday (June 16).

She becomes the second female Mayor of CMC, following Rosy Senanayaka.
