Kohila consumption increased by 40% due to economic crisis!

A research report released by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute yesterday (29) said the consumption of Kohila (Lasia stalk) in Sri Lanka has increased by 40 percent during the height of the economic crisis in 2022. 

The report titled ‘Economic Crisis and Household Food Security in Sri Lanka- 2022’ of the research conducted over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has revealed the impact on the food consumption pattern of the people of the country due to the crisis.

Food inflation in Sri Lanka rose to 95 per cent during the period from September 2021 to the end of 2022.

The report showed that the demand for Kohila increased up to 45 per cent during the economic crisis and most of the people have used any vegetable available in their surroundings for food.

In comparison, consumption of beans has decreased by 30 percent, carrots by 29 percent, pumpkin by 27 percent, eggplant by 27 percent, and green vegetables by 10 percent.

When considering the nutritional values, 25 percent in urban areas, three percent in rural areas and seven percent in the plantation sector have not received protein-rich foods. Meanwhile, 66 percent in urban areas, 46 percent in rural areas and 41 percent in the plantation sector experienced shortages of foods with vitamin A. 

The survey report said that 56 percent of the population did not receive any food containing heme iron, and 78 percent of the plantation sector did not consume meat and fish containing heme iron.

Helicopter crash during SLAF training session

A Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has reportedly crashed today (May 09).

It crashed during a training session at the Hingurakgoda Air Force Base.

Further reports indicate that the helicopter crashed into the Maduru Oya Reservoir.

American Cardinal elected as new Pope: Pope Leo XIV

Following a 02-day papal conclave, American Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new Pope yesterday (May 08) evening, Vatican time.

At 69, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

He becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV now assumes spiritual leadership of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

The election follows the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City, a day after participating in Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Heavy rains expected in the afternoon

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (May 09).

Showers may occur in Western province and in Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts in the morning too.

Fairly heavy rains above 50 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-central provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning.
