Rapid increase of sugar & sweet imports - CBSL

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) states that the import of sugar and sweets has rapidly increased in Jan. 2021.

According to the latest report released by the Economic Research Department of the CBSL on foreign sector activity, sugar and sweets amounting to USD 57.5 million has been imported this January, as opposed to USD 20 million spent on Jan. 2020.

This is said to be a increase of 186.9 pc.

Meanwhile, expenditure on food and beverage imports in January 2021 have increased by 24.6 pc compared to 2020 with the CBSL pointing out that imports of coconut oil, chillies and dhal have gone up.
