Prices of rice mill owners, unreasonable - minister

Retail prices for rice announced by rice mill owners are unreasonable, said State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection, Lasantha Alagiyawanna on Tuesday (28).
In a statement, the minister had noted that if any faction decides to abuse the government’s decision to lift control prices and increase the prices, the government and the consumer affairs authority will responsibly intervene to protect the consumer.

During a media briefing earlier today, rice mill owners announced the new retail price for rice.

Businessman Dudley Sirisena addressing the media said the price revision will be as follows :

01 kg of Nadu Rice – Rs. 115/-
01 kg of Samba Rice – Rs. 140/-
01 kg of Keeri Samba – Rs. 165/-

He said the above prices are for rice that is of high quality.

During yesterday's (27) Cabinet meeting, approval was given to remove price controls imposed on rice, and to annul the gazette notification on maximum wholesale & retail prices on rice.

The Cabinet had further decided to import up to 100,000 MT of rice as a buffer stock to prevent any artificial shortage of rice in the market.
