NGJA Chairman unaware of bid received for 'Queen of Asia' Featured

Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) - Thilak Weerasinghe had told the media in Dubai yesterday that he had not been notified that a bid of US $ 100 million (Rs. 20 billion) had been received for the world's largest natural blue sapphire named 'Queen of Asia' which was found in Sri Lanka.

He was responding to a query regarding reports that a Dubai company had agreed to buy the gem at that price.

The 'Corundum' type gem weighing 310 kilograms was found in a mine in the Balangoda area in Ratnapura.
