The minister said this on June 01 during a meeting with the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya (SLNSS) office of the Sri Lankan Airline.
The Minister further stated that a large amount of taxpayer money that could have been used for the development of this country has been spent to maintain this airline which has remained as a white elephant project for a prolonged period.
In the face of the current economic crisis it is an injustice to the country to do so anymore, the minister had pointed out, adding that the airline must therefore be restructured.
Noting that a good model should be set up for this restructuring process, the minister had said he would appreciate it if local investors would come forward to take over the airline.
He also pointed out that the airline doesn't own a single flight in its fleet at the present as all flights are on lease.
Chairman of the SLNSS - Janaka Vijaya Pathirana said the plight of the national carrier is not the employees' fault but politicians and top administrators who took incorrect decisions should be held responsible.
He also admitted the need for the airline to be restructured in order to safeguard it. He also urged to hand over SriLankan Airlines to a local investor if it is given to another outside party.
