Rs. 400 m bribe demanded to approve sugar factory! Featured

A certain ministry official has demanded a Rs. 400 million bribe to grant approval for a now-closed sugar factory to resume operations.

He has told the would-be investors that he needed the money to buy a luxury house from Colombo, as he was due to retire soon.

The sugar factory is yet to resume operations although an agreement was signed on 11 August 2016 with an Indian company to run it as a state-private partnership.

According to the agreement, the government will own a 51 per cent stake of the partnership, and the balance will be owned by the Indian company which will invest 100 million US dollars.
