Central Bank Governor to resign!

Current Central Bank Governor Indrajith Coomaraswamy has informed President Maithripala Sirisena of his intention to resign, according to highly placed government sources.

It is believed that the reason for his desire to resign was over the Prime Minister’s attck on Coomaraswamy and several other Monetary Board members during a discussion over the Central Bank Bond issue.

However, the President had informed Coomaraswamy that despite his desire to resign under the prevailing conditions, he was appointed to the post of CB Governor by the President after much consideration and urged him to remain in his post.

Monetary Board members of the Central Bank, Nihal Fonseka and Chrishantha Perera have also informed the President of their desire to resign from their posts together with the CB Governor.
