People’s Bank issues clarification

In a statement, People’s Bank has clarified that they have not received any direct or indirect requests or instructions from any state institution to close their accouts with the bank.

Previously, the state owned ‘Dinamina’ newspaper had reported that heads of government institutions have informed the Ministry of Finance that they will immediately move their existing accounts at the People’s Bank to other banks.

New tax percentages for imported vehicles announced

The government has announced the import tax percentages applicable to vehicles imported from February 2025.

According to the gazette notification issued in this regard, excise duties ranging from 200% to 300% have been imposed on vehicles.

Rice import deadline ends

Sri Lanka Customs has announced that 167,000 MT of rice has been imported to Sri Lanka since the government has permitted imports.Customs media spokesman – Seevali Arukgoda has said that this includes 66,000 MT of Red Raw Rice and 101,000 MT of Parboiled Rice.

The deadline for importing rice ended at midnight yesterday (Jan 10).

Liquor & cigarette prices upped with excise duty hike

The prices of cigarettes have been increased from today (January 11) in line with the increase in the Excise Duty imposed on cigarettes, according to the Ceylon Tobacco Company (CTC).

Accordingly, the prices of cigarettes have been increased under 4 categories by Rs. 05 and Rs. 10 per stick.

Meanwhile, prices of liquor have also been increased by approximately 6% following the hike in Excise Duty imposed on liquor with effect from today (Jan. 11).
