Film halls to reopen from Jan. 01

In his capacity as minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, PM Mahinda Rajapaksa has granted permission to reopen cinemas across the island from Jan. 01, 2021.

According to a media release issued by the PM's office, cinema halls will therefore reopen on Friday (Jan. 01), under strict health guidelines.

However, cinema halls will remain closed in isolated areas.

According to the media release, the PM has decided thus after film producers, directors and the Film Exhibitors Association and several other artistes had informed the Prime Minister of the impact on the industry due to cinemas remaining closed.

However, the PM has emphasised that the cinema halls should be disinfected when reopening to the public.

The media release adds that the government will not hesitate to take all measures to safeguard the film industry.
