Cinemas given grace period to pay electricity bills

Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma says cinema owners will be granted a grace period to settle electricity tariffs that have been delayed owing to the coronavirus.

Accordingly, cinema owners who have not settled electricity tariffs since March 2020 to date will be granted a grace period till December 2021 in order to settle dues.

The Ministry said payments can be made in installments.

Minister Alahapperuma instructed the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Lanka Electricity Company to refrain from disrupting the power supply owing to late payments.

The grace period will be applicable to 194 cinemas registered under the National Film Corporation.

According to a directive by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa cinemas across the island, that were closed for a lengthy period owing to the coronavirus, will reopen from tomorrow under strict health guidelines.
