The maiden Nelum Yaya Blog Awards Festival was held in 2014 which was well received by the blogging professionals as well as blog readers in the country.
Organised by the Nelum Yaya Foundation, this year’s event will be held for the third consecutive year and will be held at the Water’s Edge Hotel on March 25 from 3.00pm - 7.00pm.
Speaker - Karu Jayasuriya, Health Minister - Rajitha Senaratne and Commissioner of Elections - Mahinda Deshapriya will be among the distinguished guests who will be present at the ceremony.
The event was announced at a media briefing held at the Water’s Edge Colombo and was attend by Mr. Sumith Kalanasiri of the Bloggers Association, Independent blogger - Mr. Ajith Parakum Jayasinghe, Ms. Kumuduni Wijewardhana of the Lanka News Web and Ms. Anuradha Kodagoda of the Nelum Yaya Foundation.
Going back in history, Ms Kumuduni said that the Nelum Yaya initiative began not as an awards ceremony but as a social welfare branch of the Lanka News Web, with projects aimed to assist schoolchildren with inadequate facilities.
Adding her voice, Ms. Anuradha Kodagoda of the Nelumyaya Foundation said that the initial categorising and the selections will be made by the Bloggers Association while the winners will be finalised by a 4-member panel.
Speaking, professional and independent blogger - Mr. Ajith Jayasinghe defined blogging as refined form of citizen journalism and elaborated the importance of felicitating bloggers to promote blogging as well as to encourage them.
He also added that blogging had undergone a drastic change over the recent years with many taking up blogging via social media. He added that In this manner, there are many bloggers who will not fall into the criteria of this awards ceremony, which focuses on blogsites. He suggested that the Bloggers Association to try and include them in the future awards ceremonies.
Addressing the media briefing, Mr. Sumith Kalanasiri of the Bloggers Association said that they aimed to continue the blog culture through this event.
Nelum Yaya Blog Awards Festival has been created to recognize true viral style and creative excellence across a variety of 21 main awards including; Best Blog Award (Three awards - first, second and third places for Sinhala/Tamil/English) and blogs that have been operating under below topics; Education, History, Topical Discussion, Short Stories, Political, Translation, Comedy, Fictions, Scientific fiction, Science and Technology, Music, Travel and Photography, Poetry and Literature reviews.
For the Nelum Yaya Blog Awards Festival 2016 we consider the blog posts that have been published during the period of 1st of January – 31 December 2016 and the blogs and blog posts which have been shortlisted by the Sri Lanka Bloggers Association.The shortlisted blogs and blog posts will be judged by an independent panel of judges and finalize the winners of the year under above mentioned categories. The names of this year's panel of judges will be disclosed at the award ceremony.
