Majority of Lankans arrested in Kuwait, released

A group of 26 Sri Lankans including the singers, who were arrested in Kuwait, have been released.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 24 were released last night following intervention by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait with two members of the organizing committee still in police custody.

The group, which included singers Indrachapa Liyanage, Samanalee Fonseka, Jolly Siya and Upeka Darmini, were arrested by Kuwaiti police on Friday (Aug. 02).

They had attended an event organized by the JVP-affiliated ‘Ethera Api’ Organization.

In addition to the singers, the band performing at the event as well as event organizers, were also arrested with the band’s musical instruments taken into the custody.

The arrests were made due to the unauthorized conduct of the event, reports say.
