A very well-known accomplished music director, composer, a fabulous keyboardist and an Icon in music arrangements, in fact a household name in music, Mahesh has made enormous contributions to the music industry in Sri Lanka becoming a maestro perhaps even superseding the achievements of father Patrick Denipitiya. He is well known to be a trend setter who has created a turning point in the music industry to focus on unplugged and creative fusion music, inspired mainly by the local cultures and traditions and other music genres. A concept which Mahesh has successfully navigated over with his diverse music arrangements.
Fusion music describes what happens when established music styles and genres, sometimes a mix of traditional and modern areintertwinedtogether to create a unique arrangement. Although sometimes known to be controversial, this has helped in the evolution of the music industry as we know it.
Mahesh’s musical susceptibility commenced with a guitar, a 9thyear birthday gift with the blessings of his dear parents . He was taught how to manage time when he attended recordings at night during weekendswithout disrupting studies. It is pertinentto state that Mahesh had met his wife Nandika ,an Architectby professionat the University of Moratuwa where they were both studying having metin a Buddhist Bakthi Gee program, though Mahesh a Roman Catholic had no biased religious discrimination. Blessed with two children eldest daughter Dulani studying for a Doctorate in Landscape Architecture in Melbourne while son Eshan is an accomplished pianist, having graduated in Music and is now living in Singapore. Both are very gifted in music having inherited creative talents.
As a full time Musician, his first assignment was with the popular duo Bathiya & Santush in launching SAREGAMA Recording Studios (prior to this he gained experience at Al Nazaer high-tech studio complex in Kuwait as their Studio Maintenance Engineer). Later touring extensively with BnS, which included aconcertat the Sydney Opera House in 2005. During this time, he also contributed to choral music by popularizing original arrangements of Sinhala songs for western choirs.
Initially Mahesh had impressed the Sri Lankan public playing for the first ever reality program ‘Sirasa Super Star’ Season 1 in 2006. The producers and directors originally had insisted him to perform as a solo pianist, but he created a new trend to introduce a musical setup with violin, piano and percussion, increasing viewer ratings making it the most watched TV programme at the time and altered the path of the music industry. Thereafter all other channels followed suite in all reality competitions.
Among many milestones and achievements in his musical career to date, the latest was the video he was involved in called “Aluth Iskole”. As a part of the team consisting of Mariazelle Goonetilleke, Upul Sannasgala, Shakila Perera, Sagara Lakmal and Kelum Srimal, he created a musical masterpiece which only could have been done by a music maestro like Mahesh involving seventy five artistes and musicians. This video was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of “World Earth Day” on 22nd April 2020. The Artistes and musicians were united during the COVID-19 lockdown recording both audio and video via mobile phones, complying with social distancing guidelines. With the original concept, lyrics and video editing and project coordination done by the other members of the project team, the music composition, arrangements, mixing and mastering was by the music IconMahesh. This was an astounding composition which had to do be done with immense patience and precision with his computer hardware expertise which were all within Mahesh’wide
recognition and repertoire.
Mahesh Denipitiya together with the best instrumentalists and singers in the industry, has a sought after orchestra who organize shows of course not frequently with many popular vocalists. He began his own series of concerts named “Mahesh Denipitiya Live” in 2016, which has been held ever since to full house audiences. He has also provided creative music direction to popular singers and for many landmark concerts such as Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle live in Sri Lanka, Sunil Shantha’s 100th birth anniversary concert, BnS Studio Live etc. The band he founded, MaFF (Mahesh and Fusion Friends), is also in high demand for weddings and other events due to their unique and quality musical entertainment.
In addition in the recent past, another milestone achieved by maestro Mahesh was when TV Derana (Premium entertainment channel) in partnership with Dell Computers approached him to launch “Dell Studio”, an award winning music program series, to rerecord the popular songs of all artistes with his mastermind creative music direction. He successfully created this new music concept for four seasons between the years 2014 to 2017 uninterruptedly. A quite a hazardous task, but completed triumphantly with his able musical instrumentalists with the competent support singing group in Anushka, Apeksha, Praneeth, Gayani, Saman Lenin, Sanka etc. All present living artistes were invited to sing and execute to their heart’s content, which all viewers, both young and old, had enjoyed the obvious change well. Mahesh triumphed having acted as a genius in this endeavour.
Maheshhad composed his fist song at the age of 13, titled “Kurullane Pani Kurullane” for Rupa Indumathi. As a music composer, he has composed to date over 300 Songs, commercials and has been involved in total music or Song recordings or both in 15 Movies and 5 Tele dramas. Mahesh also has a habit of helping many in music compositions for new songs voluntarily. It was on 15th May ‘20 released the song “Premaye Sirakariye” sung by Anushka Madubhashini on YouTube. Then subsequently the songs “Pathimawe Deva maniyani” and “Dinak Dinak” sung by Praneeth Shivanka also on YouTube.
In the above context, in the field of music, Mahesh is very busy as a sought after musical genius continuing to flourish in our music industry contributing his enormous talent in music arrangements. May he possess sufficient strength to create more to our music industrywhich had been his motive since quitting his profession as a computer hardware engineer.
