The road of a decade as SLM marks 10 years Featured

As Autumn mellows towards winter in the northern hemisphere, another year draws to a close.

A year of hardships, fear and sickness, yet filled with hope and human resilience in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic as many nations brace for the second wave which is already upon us.

Yet time has continued to fly and we find ourselves nearly at the end of another year. Another November.

Throughout history, November 01 has been an eventful day. From the All Saints' Flood in 1570, maiden performances of Shakespeare's Othello and Tempest to the Maastricht Treaty taking effect, formally establishing the European Union, all happened on this day. In addition, it is also the birthday of literary greats - Ezra Pound and Dale Carnegie as well as the date of Sri Lanka's first executive president - J.R. Jayawardena's death.

As skies dawn on another November 01, 'Sri Lanka Mirror' steps into another year and not just any year.

For us at 'Sri Lanka Mirror', we are at a milestone of our own, at the threshold of our 10th anniversary, on November 01, 2020. A decade-long bond woven from threads of friendship, faith and support from our readers around the world, bound with our solemn pledge 'Right To Know, Power to Change'.

As we look back in our journey, we are humbled. And as it was said in Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest' notes : "What's past is prologue". In a contemporary sense, the phrase stands for the idea that history sets the context for the present. And though the road has been long and hard, it is that challenging past that has moulded us into what we are today.

Although it is definitely a milestone that deserves to be celebrated with pomp and pageantry, in our hearts we cannot.

At a time when the health necessities force us to be cooped inside our homes, where many have lost employment, where many worry for their next meal, where millions of Covid-19 patients are fighting for their lives, and where frantic frontline staff are at constant risk, where no one seems truly safe, it is neither the time nor place for a celebration.

Instead, it is the time to appreciate and cherish our loved ones even more. And for us, it is our beloved readers who have stood by us for a solid decade no matter whether the times were good or low. We are humbled by the faith our readers have continued to place on us.

A special tribute to all team members, present and past, for every step we have come forward and all victories along the way are fruits of the efforts and sacrifices made by all of you throughout the years.

Also, a warm appreciation to mentors, friends and wellwishers who have been with us through thick and thin.

And so, as we mark our anniversary on a sombre note, we fervently wish and hope for blessings, health and better times. Keep eachother safe and cherished, wherever you are in the wide world. And as with everything, this too shall pass, and as it is with the way with the world, changes will come with time... And on a fairer day, we will rejoice... together.
