1.1 million women behind the wheel!

Among the over 12.7 million registered driver’s license holders in Sri Lanka, 1,122,418 are women, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) said.

DMT Commissioner (driver’s license) Wasantha Ariyarathne said 2,082 women can drive heavy vehicles.

As of December 31, 2010, only 23,488 women in Sri Lanka had obtained driver’s licenses, but in the decade up to December 31, 2020, there has been an increase in the number of women obtaining driver’s licenses.

The DMT said 943,749 women have obtained driver’s licenses in this decade.

This information has been revealed based on an inquiry made to the Commissioner General of DMT under the Right of Information Act.
