JO MPs will be unseated if they become independent - Kiriella Featured

The joint opposition MPs will have their parliamentary seats annulled in the event they become independent in the House, says leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella.

Kiriella has told ‘Mawbima’ that according to the law he knows, the general secretary of a party could unseat an MP becoming independent.

Recently, JO’s Dullas Alahapperuma inquired in parliament as to whether they would be given the opposition leader position if they became independent.

Kiriella responded by saying that they should become independent first.

Decision today

JO’s Rohitha Abeygunawardena says they will take a decision today (14) on functioning as an independent group.

The matter will be discussed at a meeting of JO leaders, to be chaired by ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, at his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha.

Once their announcement is made, the speaker should take a decision regarding the opposition leader position, Abeygunawardena adds.
