Proposal for Ranil to run for president Featured

Talks are underway on a proposal to field Ranil Wickremesinghe as the presidential candidate, while giving the prime ministerial candidacy to Maithripala Sirisena, a UNP minister has told ‘Anidda’.

If the talks are successful, provincial council polls should be called immediately, not the presidential election, and the UNP and the SLFP should contest together, he said.

Another UNP minister at the talks said Wickremesinghe wanted to contest the presidential polls, which he was confident of winning.

The SLFP stand

Meanwhile, a SLFP minister said the party was willing to ally with another party at the presidential polls.

The UNP will be that option, since the Maithripala faction cannot unite with Mahinda Rajapaksa, he said.

The SLFP wants the presidential election held first, he said, adding that if that happens, the incumbent should contest for a second term.

However, UNP leaders have noted their party could not back Sirisena to contest again, said the SLFP minister.

The two parties are yet to reach agreement on how to contest the future elections.
