Rosy misleads Ranil over Buddha statue saga

The historical Buddha statue that was in the office of the Colombo Mayor Rosie Senanayake had been removed and now it is reportedly missing, according to CMC sources.

After Rosie took over as the CMC Mayor, she had removed the historic Buddha statue, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera had told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on August 19, when they had met at a function. However, the Prime Minister had said in his speech that Rosie Senanayake had notified him that very moment that the statue had been replaced.

But by last afternoon (20) the Buddha statue had not been replaced as it was missing. During that time the Presidential Secretariat media unit had come to the CMC to inquire as to what had happened to the Buddha statue. The Mayor had got excited at this point and had got the Buddha statue that was in the office of the Chief Organiser of the ruling party and placed it in her office, misleading the Presidential Secretariat team, the CMC workers have said.

This historically significant Buddha statue had been in the Mayor’s office for over 50 years. During that period, Sirisena Cooray, Husain Mohommed, Ratnasiri Rajapaksa, K. Ganeshalingham, Karu Jayasuriya, Omar Kamil, Prasanna Gunawardena, Umais Imtiaz and A.J.M. Musammil had served as Mayor and none of them had removed or changed this Buddha statue during all this time, the CMC workers noted.
