Rs. 18 billion annual loss from post-harvest waste Featured

The loss from post-harvest loss in Sri Lanka is Rs. 18 billion annually, according to the findings of a study conducted by Chinese experts.

The loss is attributed to damage to crops by animals, waste during harvesting and abandoning cultivations due to the absence of a proper price.

The Chinese experts handed over their study report to agriculture minister Mahinda Amaraweera and briefed them about the prevent action that could be taken.

Steps to prevent post-harvest waste include the use of modern technology, raising awareness among farmers on new harvesting methods etc., they said.

Sixty per cent of crops are destroyed by animals and also due to post-harvest waste and bad weather, and only 40 pc is left for consumption, ‘Ada’ reports.
