UNP responds to president and says ready to go solo Featured

Minister Harin Fernando has play downed a remark by president Maithripala Sirisena that no party would be able to form a government without the support of the SLFP.

The president made the claim at a party Bala Mandala meeting in Nivitigala yesterday (08).

Responding to it, Fernando said the UNP believed that it should contest elections alone, to avoid such talk.

He has told Neth News that neither his party nor the SLPP wanted to show a majority, although they were capable of doing that.

SLFP’s ‘group of 15’ member Anura Priyadarshana Yapa too, refers to the president’s remark and says the party should form a government of its own, without helping another party to do so.

Meanwhile, joint opposition MP Udaya Gammanpila says the president is daydreaming as he is now without a vote base as the UNP is not in good terms with him.

The best thing for him to do now is to hold the already delayed provincial council election, he says.
