The Jaffna-Colombo intercity train No. 4021 had faced technical difficulties on September 19 close to the Galgamuwa railway station and the railway technician was unable to rectify this fault. However, a student on the train had managed to rectify the fault and the train was able to commence its journey, it was reported in the media.

This student, Janith Dimantha Withanarachchi had studied at the German Technical College and is currently pursuing his higher studies at a private university.

The Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva who had been notified about this incident had called the student to his office and commended him for his actions and awarded him a letter of commendation.

Minister of Minister of Science, Technology, Research, Skills Development & Vocational Training and Kandyan Heritage Sarath Amunugama and other railway officials were also present.

The student Janith Dimantha Withanarachchi said, “This incident occurred while I was returning from Anuradhapura with my mother and several other relatives. I was sleeping at the time, but my mother woke me up and wanted me to see what had happened. By then the railway officials had taken the train to the Galgamuwa station and was in the process of notifying the passengers that they would be provided transport to Colombo.

With the approval of the railway technicians, I inspected the train and rectified the fault. I notified the minister today of the actions I took to rectify the fault.

I never intended to inconvenience anyone or publicize what I had done. I fount out later that this incident was published on Face Book. However, I appreciate the Minister’s efforts to have me here and commend me for what I did and I thank him for it. I intend to complete my degree and produce new inventions and serve my country better.”
