Canteen owners lay conditions for 50% reduction in prices

If the government is prepared to send vehicles to Dambulla and transport vegetables to Colombo, the All Island Canteen Owners Association said they would reduce the price of food by 50%.

The AICOA Chairman Asela Sampath said the lorries belonging to the Army, Civil Defence Force and Sathosa could be used for this purpose.

Although the price of vegetables is very high currently, around 20% - 22% of it is discarded and due to this shortage the black marketers are fleecing the people, he added.

According to Sampath, if his proposal is implemented, it would be a practical solution to reduce the price of vegetables.

He also suggested that the discarded vegetables be dumped in the jungles to feed the wild animals such as wild boar, in order to prevent them from entering the farms and destroying crops.්
