Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka refutes newspaper report

Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia - Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka has refuted claims levelled against by a newspaper report titled 'Defense Attaché recalled from Moscow after Dayan's Protest'.

In a statement, Dr. Jayatilleka clarifies facts on the matter.

The full statement is as follows :

Dear Editor,

An English language Sunday newspaper has run a story about the Sri Lankan embassy in Moscow and actions purportedly taken by the Head of Mission with regard to its Defense attaché. The story is empirically inaccurate. The facts of the latest story regarding our Mission in Moscow are as follows:

The headline of the newspaper story "Defense Attaché recalled from Moscow after Dayan's Protest" is false. I made no such "protest" still less "an official complaint". Furthermore at no time did I "send in a report to the Foreign Ministry" nor tell anyone that I "could not be the head of only one part of the Embassy". This is the third time I have served as ambassador and the second time in a state belonging to the Permanent Five of the Security Council, and there has never been a case of my functioning as “the head of only one part of the Embassy” nor do I expect it ever to be a problem wherever I serve in this capacity or as the head of anything, anywhere, at any time.

I have made no official complaint about any staffer and have sent nothing in writing to either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Defense on any staffer or matter.

While I did make certain critical observations in good humour, in agreement with his superior at an informal dinner, these have been taken out of context and embellished or spun. The newspaper should have checked the story with me, which it did not.

I would be grateful if your newspaper/website were to publish/post this refutation.

Yours sincerely,

Dayan Jayatilleka, Ph.D.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation
