‘UNP Presidential Candidate not named yet : Maithri would not be rejected’

The UNP has not taken a decision with regard to the 2020 Presidential candidate as yet and the media reports published have no truth in them, said State Administration, Management and Law and Order Deputy Minister Nalin Bandara.

He noted that the Presidential candidate would be decided by the UNP working committee, he said refuting media reports that the UNP and SLFP had held talks regarding the upcoming Presidential candidate.

Nalin Bandara said this in a special statement to the media in Kurunegala on October 07, in response to the false media reports being published about the presidential candidate.

Majority stand of the UNP!

“I have noticed certain news reports being published that there were plans to name Maithripala Sirisena as the next Presidential candidate, but I must say, these reports are completely false and baseless.

The UNP has yet not taken a decision with regard to the 2020 Presidential candidate and the Presidential candidate would be named based on a decision taken by the Central Working Committee of the party.

There is over 1 ½ years more for the Presidential election and the UNP is not a party that names their Presidential candidate 1 ½ years prior to the election.

By 2020, depending on the country’s political situation and the trust of the civil organisations and the minor parties, we would determine the best candidate to contest the presidential election and present him at the right time.

Our intention is to appoint a UNP President by 2020 and that is the stand of the majority of UNP members.

‘Don’t join the Rajapaksas’

We will not reject President Maithripala Sirisena at any point and we will work with him. The UNP rendered a huge effort in having him appointed to the post of President.

Hence, we urge the President not to join up with the forces that worked against him in 2015 and further act in a manner that would fulfil the expectations of the people.”
