Estate workers reject employers’ proposal

The talks between the estate united unions and the estate employers Association held last evening (15) ended without agreement.

The estate owners had proposed that the daily wage paid to estate workers be increased from Rs. 530 to Rs. 600 and increase the daily wage to Rs.940 inclusive of all allowances.

However, the estate unions had rejected this proposal and demanded that their basic wage be increased to Rs.1000.

With yesterday’s talks failing, the estate workers staged their protests this morning as well.

Due to the protests this morning, the traffic on the Hatton-Colombo main road was hampered from 9.30-10.30.

The protestors warned that if their basic wage is not increased to Rs. 1000, they would be compelled to intensify their protests in the future.
