Recently a hike in the prices of rice in the market has been observed. The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute (HARTI) says this trend of increasing rice prices has been observed every year from October to January in the past few years.
However, the present government has intervened to reduce the price hikes to ease the burden on the masses. The committee on cost of living has taken a step to regulate the price of rice to minimize hardships caused to the public.
The Minister of Agriculture has held a discussion with the large scale rice traders under the directions of the President and the traders have agreed to reduce the maximum price of rice.
Accordingly, price of one kilogram of Supiri Samba variety has been reduced to 108 rupees from 119 rupees and price of Nadu variety has also been reduced to 88 rupees from 98 rupees. The price reduction will also be effective on other rice varieties.
The government has also taken measures to promote domestic farmers and yield more harvest inside the country itself.
