The cabinet of ministers had given the nod for Sri Lanka Air Force had been given a 1,965 million rupee contract to rebuild the airport, the state information office said.
The proposal was put forward jointly by the Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and National Economic Policy Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Sri Lanka has an under-developed domestic flight network, but an Indian backed development of rail has made Jaffna more accessible to the rest of the country, cutting travel times.
