SLFP takes over from Basil task of securing majority Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena has handed over to three SLFP MPs the task of securing a parliamentary majority to justify his replacing of Ranil Wickremesinghe with Mahinda Rajapaksa as the prime minister, party sources say.

Thilanga Sumathipala, S.B. Dissanayake and Lakshman Wasantha Perera will oversee the task, taking over from SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa, who has failed to deliver.

On November 15, president Sirisena summoned the SLFP MPs and instructed them to show a parliamentary majority within the next few days.

Later, minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena quoted the president as saying that he would never run an administration with Wickemesinghe again.

Crossover price goes up as Sumathipala is on the hunt

On the president’s orders, Sumathipala has also requested several UNP and minority party MPs to join the new government.

As a result, the crossover price is going up again, the sources say.

Referring to the MPs being bought, president Sirisena said in a speech that the worth of an MP was between Rs. 100 million and Rs. 150 million, and sometimes even Rs. 500 million.
