Friday is going to be crucial Featured

A floor vote will take place when parliament meets on Friday the November 30th on the proposal submitted by the UNF, TNA and the JVP to cut the votes of the office of the prime minister and the cabinet.

A senior UNF MP told Sri Lanka Mirror that all arrangements were in place to defeat the so-called Mahinda Rajapaksa regime for the fifth time.

Sworn affidavits by more than 113 MPs supporting the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as the prime minister will be handed over on that day to the speaker, he said.

The UNF MP added that international media has been invited as well to cover the occasion.

Petition hearing on the same day

Meanwhile, November 30 will also see the hearing of a petition in the court of appeal seeking annulment of Rajapaksa’s appointment as the prime minister.

A three member CA bench headed by Preethi Padman Surasena today took up the case filed by 122 MPs of the UNP, TNA, JVP and the SLMC.

The petitioners note that Rajapaksa does not command majority House support and has no legal right to hold the position of prime minister.

Rajapaksa and 49 ministers appointed by the president have been cited as respondents.

According to the Hansard report for November 16, speaker Karu Jayasuriya does not recognize Rajapaksa and his cabinet following the passage of a no-confidence motion against them.
