Foreign liquor store raided

The Excise Department had raided a foreign liquor distribution centre in Boralesgamuwa and confiscated a stock of foreign liquor worth Rs. 6 million which was being transported in a luxury van.

According to the Excise Department Commissioner and Media Spokesman Kapila Kumarasinghe, there were over 2500 bottles of wine, whisky, brandy, tequila, rum and vodka among the stock of liquor that was confiscated.

Based on a tip-off received by Excise Commissioner General S. Semasinghe, the liquor distribution centre was raided and they had also taken into custody another 200 bottles of liquor imported without a proper approval.

Kapila Kumara said that due to the continuous illegal import of foreign liquor the government is deprived of a large sum in taxes.

The excise officers are continuing further investigations regarding the confiscated stock of foreign liquor on the directives of the Excise Commissioner General.
