Eight Indian fishermen arrested!

The Northern Naval officers had arrested eight Indian fishermen who had encroached on Sri Lankan territorial waters illegally and had been engaged in fishing activities near the Delft Island yesterday (17), according to the Deputy Director of the Jaffna Fisheries Inspector’s Office S. Shivakaran.

He said that the Navy had rescued the Indian fishermen who were fishing in Sri Lankan waters and were stranded at sea due to a mechanical failure of their boat, and had handed them over to the Jaffna Fisheries Inspectors Office.

The eight Indian fishermen are from the Rameswaram area in India and is scheduled to be produced in the Kytes Magistrate’s Court.

The Jaffna Fisheries Inspector’s Office officers are conducting further investigations.
