Maithri’s representatives at talks with Basil Featured

Talks are underway between the SLFP and the SLPP to field Maithripala Sirisena as their candidate at a presidential election to be called next March, reliable sources told Sri Lanka Mirror.

President Sirisena was represented by his adviser Shiral Lakthilake and MP Malith Jayatilake at a preliminary round of talks in this regard with SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa.

He has been told by his advisers that a presidential election should take place before the UNF government strengthened its vote base through a budget with concessions and through the Gam Peraliya and Gam Udawa programmes.

The advisers are also planning to use the bribery commission amendment act to their advantage by getting it passed next month to initiate legal action against key UNP figures.

The UNP has said that it would field its own candidate at the next presidential polls.
