‘Disco’ affects Puttalam onions Featured

Onion cultivation in Puttalam has been affected by a fungi locally known as ‘disco’ that is spreading fast in the Kalpitiya peninsula.

Farmers had to mortgage their properties and pawn jewelry to find money, as nearly Rs. 200,000 is required to cultivate around 500 hundredweight of seed onions.

Added are the costs for fertilizer, pesticide and for labour.

The fungi spreads in one acre of land within a space of two days.

Farmers blame mainly the officers attached to the Puttalam agrarian services centre for their plight.

When contacted, an officer said the impact of the fungi was only minimal.
