Additional Rs. 159 b cost if salaries are raised Featured

A proposal by the ‘Ranukge committee’ to raise the salaries of state administrative officers will incur an additional cost of Rs. 159 billion annually to the state, reports say.

If raised as proposed, Rs. 147 b more will have to be spent on their salaries and another Rs. 12 b on retired officers in their pension payments.

Already, 44 per cent of state revenue has to be set aside for the payment of salaries of public servants.

It was Rs. 900 b out of the Rs. 2,040 b revenue in 2018.

Statistics show 1,251 state institutions employ 1.5 million persons.
