77,000 traffic rule violations on expressways taken to courts Featured

More than 77,000 cases over traffic rule violations in the southern and Katunayake expressways were filed in courts in 2018, says the traffic police headquarters.

Of them, 27,681 are over speeding, 84 over drunk driving, 18,631 over not lighting signal lamps, 1,005 over not wearing seat belts and 1,461 over using mobile phone while driving.

During the year, 577 accidents had taken place in the two expressways, causing eight deaths and injuries to 101 persons.

Meanwhile, DIG (traffic) Ajith Rohana says modern technology will be used to minimize accidents on highways.
