Ginigathena pine forest ablaze

The fire that engulfed the pine forest in the Kadawala area in Ginigathena is still raging for the past four days.

The residents claim that this pine forest managed under the Wildlife Department expands around 100 acres from Ginigathena, Diyagala area to the Norton bridge area.

They claim that the fire could have been set off by a certain group and had spread due to the dry weather conditions in the central hills. The pine forest is home to many wildlife including elk, spotted deer, leopards, rabbits and wild boar.

Several streams run through this forest into the Kelani river.
