A general election in mid 2019? Featured

The UNP leadership is considering holding a general election mid this year, according to sources in the party.

At a time when the opposition wants presidential and provincial councils held, several seniors have explained to prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that it would be more advantageous for them to go for a general election after presenting a budget attractive to the people and expediting the ‘Gam Peraliya’ programme.

The SLPP has already said that it would support securing a two-third majority in parliament that is required to call a general election early.

Gam Peraliya to be completed by August

Meanwhile, the treasury has informed all district secretaries that ‘Gam Peraliya’ development projects this year should be completed by August 31.

Each electorate has been allocated Rs. 300 million for a total Rs. 48 billion allocation for public welfare and infrastructure development programmes.

Finance secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga has given the DS detailed advice about the implementation of ‘Gam Peraliya.
