31 suspects, including Madush, were arrested at a party in a super-luxury hotel in Dubai, while 14 other suspects were arrested outside the hotel.
However, it is reported that the underworld gang leader Makandure Madhush, who was arrested on May 5 in Dubai, cannot be brought in to Sri Lanka under the current valid diplomatic agreements between the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.
The reason for this is that there is no extradition treaty between Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates, at present.
In the meantime, there is a clause on an agreement between the two countries on exchange and deportation of prisoners and criminals, functioning of the agreement has not come into existence as Sri Lanka has not fulfilled certain legal requirements for enforcing it.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, making a statement on arrest of Makandure Madush in Parliament on the 6th of this month said that the suspects will be dealt with the UAE’s law, initially.
