Two Chinese nationals arrested on a beetle smuggle

Two Chinese nationals have been arrested for smuggling a species of beetles in Horton Plains National Park, a world heritage site.

Two Chinese nationals who attempted to capture the beetles in the Horton Plains National Park were arrested yesterday (18), said the Custodian of the Horton Plains National Park P.K. P.N. Pradeep Kumara.

The arrest was made on a tip off received that the two Chinese nationals who had arrived at the Horton Plains National Park as tourists were trying to catch beetles, he said.

Pradeep Kumara added that they had recorded statements from both of them and will be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court.

About 10 beetles were found in the possession of the two Chinese nationals.

Meanwhile, in the Horton Plains National Park, a special security program has been launched by the authorities.
