Toddy consumer dies - Tavern closed (Pics)

An estate worker of Pudaluoya, Talawakele, has died consuming toddy from a tavern in Pudaluoya and three others have been admitted to the Kotmale Provincial Hospital, the Pudaluoya Police said.

The victim is a 37 year old unmarried male, P. Sendilnathan of the upper section of the Harold Garden, Pudalu Oya Police Division.

The Kotmale divisional secretariat has granted an annual tender to run the tavern at the Pudaluoya town and it is reported that a businessman from Pudalu oya town has obtained the tender for a sum of Rs. 50 lakhs for the year 2019.

The Pudaluoya Police say that artificially made toddy is sold in the toddy tavern. On Friday (26), a group of people who had consumed toddy from the place have been suffering from nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Currently, three people are receiving treatment at the Kotmale Hospital.

According to the victim’s relatives, that he had vomited at night as he was severely under the influence of toddy and had vomited. Later on he had died in the house.

After the incident, the officials of the Nuwara Eliya Excise Office visited tavern at Pudaluoya and sent several bottles of toddy to the Government Analyst and temporarily shut it down until the investigations were concluded.

Kotmale Pradeshiya Sabha Vice President Mahinda Seneviratne and villagers say that the businessman who won this tender sells substandard toddy.

Due to this tavern in Pudaluoya, many people in the area have been addicted to toddy resulting many socio-economic problems adversely impacting family members.

The residents are urging the relevant authorities to take steps to close the tavern. Officers attached to the Pudaluoya Police Station and the Nuwara Eliya Excise Office have launched separate investigations into the incident.
