Govt. to establish 3 more EPZs - PM

The Prime Minister while refuting media reports that the incumbent government does not give agriculture the pride of place,said that his government succeeded in making the country self sufficient in rice after King Parakaramabahu the VI. Wickremesinghe was speaking at the inauguration of work on the Bingiriya Export Processing Zone (EPZ), the Biggest EPZ in Sri Lanka yesterday.

The Prime Minister added that the Bingiriya EPZ which is in extent of 600 acres is the biggest EPZ in the country and the government hopes to establish three more EPZs in the Moneragala, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts in the future.

“The largest EPZ in extent of 10,000 acres is to be set up in the Moneragala district while two more EPZs will be opened in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts covering an extent of 4,000 and 5,000 acres respectively,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that the present government has to pay back huge loans obtained by the previous government .

He said that the people had to undergo various economic constraints due to this. The Prime Minister also thanked the people for their commitment to get the country out of debt trap.

Ministers Kabir Hashim, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Ranjith Maddumabandara and J.C. Alawathuwala were present.
