No cabinet minister to raise private sector issues

Sources from the Labor Department say there is a big problem as there is no cabinet minister to present issues of about 8.8 million private sector employees to the cabinet.

This is the first time the Department of Labor has not been subject to a cabinet ministry. The Department of Labor is one of oldest departments in Sri Lanka set up by white imperialists, along with postal, railway, police and surveying departments.

The new cabinet is limited to 30 ministerial positions and this is the very first time the Department of Labor has not been gazzetted under a Cabinet Ministry in the parliamentary history.

As the Labor Department has been set up under Non-Cabinet Minister Ravindra Samaraweera issues of non governmental employees, for instance, estate workers’ salary issue cannot be raised to the cabinet,, due to the non-cabinet ministerial post.

Ravindra Samaraweera has been serving as a member of parliament of the UNP since 1988 and in terms of the UNP's seniority he is the 4th in the ranking.
