Chewing betel inside state institutions prohibited

Cabinet approval has been granted to prohibit the use and sale of betel, tobacco and arecanut based products in state establishments.

This measure has been taken due to the risk of oral cancers caused by betel, tobacco and arecanut products. The ban will be imposed to the public servants as well as the general public who come to state institutions to obtain services.

Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne presented the cabinet papers for issuance of a Public Administration Circular relating to this ban.
