Gammanpila made this comment during a media briefing held yesterday.

A weekend newspaper had revealed that the Rajapaksa brothers had held a meeting last Thursday (14) and had agreed upon fielding Gotabhaya as the Presidential candidate and that they would engage in an island-wide campaign shortly.

Chamal not so sure!

However, former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had already been nominated as the SLPP Presidential candidate. However, he did not mention that the Rajapaksa brothers had met and taken this decision.

He also stated that no proposal had been made regarding Basil or himself being nominated as the Presidential candidate.

Chamal Rajapaksa made this statement in response to a question posed by journalists during a function.

‘Possibility of SLFP group joining Gota’ - Dayasiri

Meanwhile, SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara noted that as Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been named as the Presidential candidate earlier, there is a possibility of his SLFO group joining him. Therefore, decisions should be taken without letting down the party.

Jayasekara said that so far no decision had been taken regarding the SLFP Presidential candidate.

However, he said that if the SLPP candidate is to win the Presidential election, the 1.4 million SLFP votes are crucial. If not, he said the UNP candidate would surely win the Presidential race.

Therefore, he said that instead of fielding two candidates from the two parties and losing the election, it would be a wise move to field one candidate from both parties in order to achieve victory.
