Local dairy industry in jeopardy Featured

The Central Province dairy farm owners attached to the Ceylon Cattle Farms Federation have submitted a petition to the Central Province Human Rights Commission stating that the heifers imported by the government and distributed among the dairy farmers are suffering from Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD), hence they are not capable of producing the amount of milk stated by the government.

Over 1000 heifers and calves have already died and the State Veterinary Officers Association (VOA) has identified that these animals were suffering from BVD which can be transmitted to the other heifers as well, which endanger the entire dairy industry of the country. The VOA stated that despite being warned of this situation 6 months ago, the government has not taken any action to rectify the situation.

The heifers imported from Australia and New Zealand were distributed among the dairy farmers for Rs.200, 000 and close to 5000 heifers are not producing sufficient amount of milk. As the heifers are suffering from BVD which has caused the death of number of other animals, the dairy farmers find it difficult to maintain the heifers, hence member dairy farmers of the Ceylon Cattle Farmers Federation requests the government authorities to reacquire the animals and reimburse the amount paid for them.
