Mangala in favour of Gota: Sajith agreeable too Featured

Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that he would be extremely happy if Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is appointed as the Presidential candidate.

Mangala who has faced many elections said this in response to a statement made by Deputy Minister Anoma Gamage yesterday during a party meeting held at the parliament complex.

When Anoma Rajapaksa had stated that if Gotabhaya Rajapaksa contests the election from the opposition it would be disadvantageous to the UNP, Mangala Samaraweera had said on the contrary it would be most advantageous if Gotabhaya does contest.

Mangala Samaraweera had said confidently that no matter who the opposition candidate would be, the UNP is certain to win the election, but if Gotabhaya is the opposition candidate it would be much easier to win the election.

Sajith Premadasa had also agreed with Samaraweera’s stance, adding that no one need to fear about the victory of the UNP.

‘Best opposition candidate Gota’ – says Rajitha

Meanwhile, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa being the SLPP Presidential candidate poses no threat to the UNF.

Issuing a media statement he said, Gotabhaya does not have the ability to win over minority votes.

He noted that even though Gotabhaya can be seen seated and having meals with the minority communities, they have not forgotten the harassment they faced during the previous government’s tenure.

The best opposition candidate for the UNF at the Presidential election would be Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, he said.

Minister Rajitha noted that while the UNF has the ability to win any election, the SLPP candidate would need to start his political campaign right from the beginning.

Prior to the 2015 Presidential election the former President felt he could win the election with just the Southern votes, but we were able to defeat him, said Minister Senaratne.

He further noted that the people will not allow further racism, religious differences and cast based candidacy.
